Spurs stay strong for win over Grizzlies

Posted Sunday July 18, 2010 6:28PM

The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 78-64 in the final day of competition at the 2010 NBA Summer League on the campus of the University of Las Vegas - Nevada. The Spurs led from end to end, with Gary Neal scoring 23 points in the first half to put San Antonio on top for good.

Neal led all scorers with 25 points, while Eric Dawson contributed with 14 points in the win. For Memphis, DeMarre Carroll finished with 14 points.

The Grizzlies, who outscored the Spurs 16-15 in the fourth quarter, cut the lead to as few as 10 points with 5:12 to play in the game, but San Antonio charged back, outscoring Memphis 8-4 in final five minutes of the game to secure the victory.

Neal and the Spurs came out firing in the first quarter, with Neil connecting on back-to-back-to-back three-pointers to give the Spurs a quick 13-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game. San Antonio scored 17 points before the Grizzlies got on the board, when Chris McCray sank a layup with 6:06 to play in the first. Neal finished with 16 points in the quarter, including 5-of-6 from behind the three point arc, as the Spurs soared to a 29-12 lead after one.

The Spurs hot shooting slowed down in the second quarter, as the team outscored Memphis by only five, 18-13, including seven points off of Memphis' 5 turnovers in the period. Neal's 23 first half points was good for only two shy of Memphis' team total. At the end of two, San Antonio owned a 47-25 advantage.

Memphis bested San Antonio 23-16 in the third period on the back of a seven-point Carroll quarter and a five-point effort from Justin Dentmon. On the defensive end, the Grizzlies held Neal scoreless in the third and allowed the Spurs to connect on only five field goals. The Spurs advantage was 63-48 going into the game's final period.

The Spurs finish their 2010 NBA Summer League stay with a perfect 5-0 record, while the Grizzlies end their run in Las Vegas with a 3-2 mark.
